On this page we catch up with and diagnose the search trends on eBay from the previous week. We get our information by matching the top 20 items spiking daily in search trends from eBay itself with other topics currently being searched on outside the eBay walls.
Top Search Trends: Week ending Friday January 11, 2013
Topping our search terms last week were the words Lamborghini and basement, which led us to this car, a Lamborghini built in a basement.
Yes, it’s true. Inspired by the movie Cannonball Run, a man built a replica of the car featured in the film in his basement. Once completed, he had to knock down the basement wall and build an earthen ramp to move the thing out. Click on the link to see the listing for this Hand Built One Off All Aluminum 1980 Lamborghini Countach. You can read the entire story over at the eBay Motors Blog, or the original story (back in 2008) on Jalopnik, here. We are sorry that the bidding didn’t reach the reserve (this time), and wish Ken Imhoff well if he decides to list this beautiful piece of work again.
The winter weather was top of mind for searchers on eBay last week. Some people enjoy the winter by going to the closest ski area and skiing, tubing, or snowboarding (or throwing snowballs at people who do). Interestingly, our eBay shoppers had only snowboarding on their minds, with searches for snowboards and snowboard bindings topping our winter sports search list. Of course, there are those of us who prefer to hide from the cold and the snow, hibernate if you will, or, if the need arises to go out in the cold, the main objective is to dress warmly. Those folks searched for mountain hardware fleeces, turtle neck sweaters, and half zip sweaters. Finally, for those people who like to avoid the whole nasty weather/getting cold experience (or exercising generally), and wait out winter storms from the comfort of the living room couch, searches for Downtown Abbey topped the list. It looks as though the new season started on HBO on January 6th, and fans want to get the scoop on the previous seasons’ shenanigans.
On the opposite end of the spectrum are those people who are sticking resolutely to their New Year’s resolutions. For them, the elliptical trainer seemed to be the ideal way to stay inside but still stay in shape. In addition, we saw shoppers searching for fitness DVDs, another nod toward staying in shape while staying inside. Of course, maybe those i-thletes (indoor athletes) are just getting in shape until they go outside and become o-thletes (outdoor athletes). Cheers to whatever keeps you happy and healthy this winter, and into this entire new year. Just remember, if your will falters and the items you bought start gathering dust at home, go ahead and sell them on eBay. We’re sure you will then use that money to join the local gym, right?
