The 1978 Ford Fairmont “Drift Car” from Fast ‘N Loud

Here at eBay stories we like cars.  Not as much as the folks over at the eBay Motors Blog, who live and breathe cars, but enough to enjoy the commute in our (fast) cars every day, rather than dreading it.  So, when this 1978 Ford Fairmont came across our Top Shared page, we had to check it out:

It certainly doesn’t look like any Ford Fairmont we’ve ever seen, from the tip of its righteous hood ornament down to it shiny metallic finish.  We had to look no further than the listing description to get an idea of what was going on with this car:

“A very unique piece of Machinery built by the world famous Gas Monkey Garage on the hit show “Fast n Loud”. Well over $40,000 to duplicate this build. We started with a clean & solid 1978 Ford Fairmont, flared the front & rear fenders to accomodate 20X8 & 20X10 Savini rims w/245/35 20 & 285/30 20 Nitto tires.Installed a ’86 Mustang 5.0 w/ an E Cam,Edelbrock Air Gap Intake,750 Demon 4bbl carb exhausting through a custom system built with a crossover pipe & Flowmasters.”

The listing goes into a lot more detail, including explaining that the metallic color comes from a chrome vinyl wrap applied to the exterior with the custom Gas Monkey Garage graphics.  To round it all out, the usual “F” hood ornament has been replaced by something a little more evil and fast-looking, which gives you an inkling of the car’s capabilities.  Take a look at this video from Fast ‘N Loud, which details some of the work done on the car:

The car has certainly been well modded, and we appreciate all the hard work that has gone into creating this gem.  If you remember, we wrote about eBay Motors own Mod Jobs, which followed the modification of a 2012 Ford Mustang GT.  Recently the folks over at eBay Motors reviewed what would happen if you matched a 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 vs. Modified 2010 Challenger SRT8.  You can read their review here.  The Ford Fairmont has been specifically modified to “drift,” which Wikipedia calls “a technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner.”  [Editor's note: the only time I remember drifting was when I was going around  a corner way too fast, in the rain!]

Although you can take the car to motorsport track events, it is also street legal and could be your everyday driver.  That ride would make the commute a joy, although we’re sure the highway patrol (God bless them) would quickly notice this flashy car like a magpie locating a new shiny object to collect.
