On this page we catch up with and diagnose the search trends on eBay from the previous week. We get our information by matching the top 20 items spiking daily in search trends from eBay itself with other topics currently being searched on outside the eBay walls.
Top Search Trends: Week ending Friday April 5, 2013
Topping our list of searches was the word puma. Since the buying and selling of actual Pumas (the animal) is prohibited, our guess was that it had something to do with Puma shoes, as shoes, specifically sneakers, make our most searched lists almost every week. We assumed incorrectly, however. Our high-value list, below, revealed this CARTIER Estate Cougar Tri-Gold Diamond Emerald Puma Necklace, Bracelet, Ring Set
Could this be what our searchers were wanting? We also ran across this rarity, this 1953 Other Makes PUMA:
According to the listing, it is one of six cars produced by Cantwell Cars Ltd., in New Zealand, by famed automobile designer Frank Cantwell. The listing goes on to note:
“It had a purpose chassis designed by Arthur Praed,a pretty fiberglass body and was originally powered by the Austin a-30 engine.total production amounted to 6 cars which frank himself raced in multiple events over several years.THIS IS ONE OF TWO SURVIVING COUPES THAT ARE KNOWN TO EXIST.”
With many watchers and 47 bids (so far), this car has generated a lot of interest from our knowledgeable eBay Motors enthusiasts. It will be interesting to see what the eventual selling price is, once the reserve is met.
An interesting term showed up on our top searched list last week, this one for bitcoin miner. Now, as my son plays Minecraft, my thought was that this was some kind of add-on for the game. I was mistaken, to say the least, especially once I noticed some of these “bitcoin miners” appeared on our high-value list (see below). So, I did a bit of investigating and asking around the office, and it turns out to be quite complicated. If you want to understand this fully, take a look at the Wikipedia entry here. Suffice to say, Bitcoins are an alternative monetary unit, that intrinsically have no value, but that are being used as currency for some online purchases. The creation of Bitcoins (which are a kind of cyber-currency) can only be done with the use of high-powered computers, and a lot of time. An interesting search, but for an item of interest to only a very specific niche group (at least for now!)
How have you been getting around lately? Perhaps there is mud, snow, slush, or other vestiges of winter in your neck of the woods. Clearly the ideal way to navigate such slippery terrain is via hovercraft, as this query propelled its way into the eBay top-searched list. Here is an example of what is on offer:
The seller arrives at some compelling arguments for owning such a contraptions, including
- “Why buy a boat when you can own a craft that can travel over Land & Water.”
- “No more boat ramp needed.”
- “NO danger if your vehicle falls through the ice.”
It sounds like owning a personal hovercraft could alleviate a lot of one’s worries.
