Long time eBay seller Defunk’d had this to say about the T-shirt: “Arguably the rarest Zeppelin T-shirt in the world given it was used as a backstage pass for one of two concerts Zeppelin played at Knebworth House. It was printed in very limited quantities and only those privileged enough to be backstage and in the company of the band were given one of these relics.”
According to Wikipedia, the concert took place in 1979 near the village of Knebworth, England, when Led Zeppelin returned to the stage after a four year touring hiatus. By that time the band had released seven albums, and the two concerts at Knebworth were supposed to celebrate the release of Led Zeppelin’s 8th album, In Through the Out Door. Production problems delayed the album’s release until days after the concerts ended, but this did not keep the band from playing a song, In the Evening, off the new album (one of the few times the song was ever played live).
We checked around to find the rarest Led Zeppelin T-shirts of all time and came across the Mademan site, which listed the five rarest. The Knebworth shirt is indeed listed first:
- Led Zeppelin backstage pass T-shirt 1979
- Led Zeppelin stage crew T-shirt 1977
- Led Zeppelin vintage T-shirt 1980 tour canceled.
- Led Zeppelin Song Remains the Same tour 1976 baseball T-shirt
- Led Zeppelin Swan Song tour 1977 baseball T-shirt.
While this seems to be quite a find, it isn’t the most expensive vintage rock T-shirt currently listed on eBay. That honor goes to the Beatles Yesterday and Today promotional shirt, colloquially called the Beatles Banned Butcher T-shirt. Sure, at its current price it may seem a lot, but that’s only if you don’t want to spend your $20K on a 1967 Shelby Cobra, a 1920’s French Viola by Ch.J.B. Colin-Mezin , or eight Zone A Tickets to the 2011 US Open Session.
Your choice. On eBay, you always find what you need.
