Imagine knowing what you want to do with your life at age five, and then meticulously executing your plan over the next 52 years to realize that dream, and much more. Is it luck that makes everything fall into place? Hard work? An incarnation of the American Dream? Or a little bit of everything mixed together? With Howard Stern, it is probably the latter. Dedication, hard work, and being in the right place at the right time certainly contributed to his success. But the adage “making your own luck” comes to mind when you take a look at his storied career. The fact that he doesn’t really need an introduction says a lot already, but if you don’t know him, here’s a little bit about him.
Howard Stern is first and foremost a radio personality and embodies the term “shock jock,” employing an extreme, in-your-face-style that has inspired many imitators. His ability to use satire and wit on-air (interspersed with profanity and obscene references) won him a legion of admirers and adherents early in his career (and has also earned him fines totaling over $3.2 million from the FCC for indecent programming). From a small radio station program back in 1981 to his self-styled “King of All Media” moniker these days, Howard is nothing if not an interesting personality. He now counts himself as an author, producer, actor, and TV host. But first and foremost he is known for his radio program. Wouldn’t it be great to join him in the studio, and watch the magic happen in person?
Today’s remarkable find allows you to do just that, it’s the chance to Meet Howard Stern in NYC and Spend Time in the Studio:
On offer is the chance for you and a guest to observe Howard Stern and his team and “see what really happens inside their Manhattan studio.” You and your guest will be sitting with the talent during a portion of his broadcast. If you are a fan of the show, you know Howard sometimes directly addresses those in the studio, so be prepared. The auction listing does note, though, that there is “no guarantee Howard will speak with you on-air.”
There have been times during the show when people in the studio audience wished they weren’t there, given how Howard (and/or the other in-studio talent) can get raunchy and downright disgusting. Keep in mind that any of the so-called “wack pack” could also be on the show, including Jeff “the Vomit Guy” Levy. You’ve been warned!
One thing that is not too well known about Howard Stern, given the tone of his shortwave radio program, is that he is a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (TM). Howard has meditated since he was 18 years old, introduced to it by his mother. Reportedly he meditates after the show, which he finds very relaxing. It is hard to reconcile his shock-jock image with one of a person completely at ease and at peace with himself, but it seems natural that people who find themselves in tense situations would turn to meditation for relief.
This is not the first time we have had an auction featuring a meet and greet with Howard Stern in NYC. Last year’s auction ended up over $18K, so right now this auction is a “bargain” at just over $5,000. We would love to hear from the winner of last year’s auction to tell us what it was like to be in the studio with the King of All Media!
Good luck bidding.
