On this page we catch up with and diagnose the search trends on eBay from the previous week. We get our information by matching the top 20 items spiking daily in search trends from eBay itself with other topics currently being searched on outside the eBay walls.
Top Search Trends: Week ending Friday October 4, 2013
About a month ago Apple announced the arrival of their new iPhones, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5c. As expected, the announcement was met with mixed reviews: some folks loved the new features available in the new iPhone 5s, while others stated Apple “is now operating in a self-hypnotic state and actually believes that its job is to create objets d’art – which is awesome, unless you are looking to buy a smartphone, in which case, you’re looking at two-year old, obsolete technology.” But it appears consumers are voting with their checkbooks, and soon the new iPhone 5s’s were selling out, as demand outgrew supply.
Here on eBay, though, you can generally find all the generations of iPhones. A quick search reveals a number of phones, including the much coveted iPhone 5S gold:
The iPhone 5S was manufactured in three different colors: gold, silver, and grey. While the functionality remains the same on all three, the cachet of having the gold caused those phones to sell out almost immediately. Happily, many of these phones have become available on eBay, although they are generally snapped up rather quickly. Our advice to those who want the phone? Wait till supply is increased or demand falls, and the price comes down, or buy a lightly used older version. No matter what you are looking for, eBay’s got your back.
With Halloween coming up at the end of the month, our searchers looked towards getting the specific costume that would fulfill their need to dress up in an alter-identity. We saw searches for specific costumes including Minnie Mouse costumes, dog costumes, cat costumes, Pocahontas costumes, Indian costume, Harry Potter costumes, Queen of Hearts costume, Ninja Turtle costumes, Batgirl costumes, and dragon costumes. It made us wonder what a “dog costume” would look like on someone, so we did a quick search.
As you can see, we misunderstood the search… these were not humans looking to dress up like dogs, but dogs looking to dress up as dinosaurs. Yes, when it is on your mind, it is certainly on eBay.. woof!
A search for “kawasaki other” had us confused until we ran across this stunning 1982 Kawasaki KZ1000S1 superbike which was categorized under the “Other” category.
The listing describes what makes this “superbike” incredibly rare and coveted:
“If you’re one of the Chosen Few, you can now obtain the unobtainable; from the May 1982 Cycle magazine S1 review article. 29 of these motorcycles were imported for AMA superbike racing in 1982, dealer cost was $10,999.00. No retail price was listed. Several ended up being shipped out of the country. It is also my understanding that some were disassembled by Kawasaki to sell as parts. How many I do not know.
So here is your chance to own a very rare motorcycle that is in excellent condition and that has a history, even if it is short. This particular bike was purchased by Grayboy Kawasaki in Peoria Heights, IL. The owner of the dealership at that time had a team running the Grand National circuit in dirt track. This bike was purchased by the owner to go roadracing with national expert rider (33) Dave Hebb of Canton,IL. His roadracing number was 93. This bike has one sprint race and two practices from one weekend of racing at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, IN. I’m not sure what happened after that, because the bike was put in storage at the dealerships warehouse until I purchased it in October of 1985. The bike was nevered titled until I purchased it from the dealership. So by the title, I’m the original owner. I have had the bike in a climate controlled storage (my house) since 1985.”
The bike ended up selling for $107,000, which is quite amazing, and the bike topped our high-value list, below.
