Meet model Heidi Klum in NYC

“As you know in fashion, one day you’re in.  And the next day you’re out.”  Supermodel Heidi Klum utters this line every week while hosting “Project Runway,” the popular reality show that has designers creating fabulous and sometimes frightening fashions on tight deadlines.  The ironic part of her signature statement is that Klum has transcended the fickle world of fashion — the one in which designers try to tell women to wear bubble skirts in spring and to avoid them like the plague in autumn — managing to stay “in” season after season, year after year.

There’s a reason Klum’s nickname in the industry is The Body.  The one-time Victoria’s Secret model also graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue.  However, according to Klum’s biography at IMDb, her modeling career almost didn’t happen.  It was on a lark that Klum sent her photos to Petra, a magazine for young German women.  Her photos caught the attention of editors who awarded her a contract with the German modeling agency Metropolitan.  Klum hopped around the runways of Europe for a few years before heading across the pond to the United States.  And the rest is history.

Now you have the chance to get up close and personal with the woman whose legs are insured for $2.2 million [her left leg has a scar and is thus insured for $200,000 less than her right leg] with today’s featured auction, Meet Heidi Klum in New York City and Support Bright Pink.

From the listing:

“In honor of Mother’s Day, you and a friend have the chance to bid on the experience of a lifetime… the chance to meet model, TV personality and entrepreneur Heidi Klum at an upcoming event in New York City. Do you want insider style advice? Advice on how to balance it all? Or just the chance to snag a picture to share with all your friends?”

The winning bidder must cover his or her transportation to and accommodation in New York City.  This minor detail has not slowed down the bidding, as this opportunity currently has 31 bids and a price of $4,800.  This is good news because “…all funds from this auction will benefit Bright Pink, a national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer while providing support for high-risk individuals.”

Klum has garnered more than her usual share of media attention lately.  Just a month ago, she filed for divorce from pop musician Seal.  She has not spent the days post-divorce hiding under a rock, however.  According to the feminist pop culture website Jezebel, Klum just appeared on the cover of Allure magazine and, inside, poses naked and takes on some rather intriguing subjects, including her stance against plastic surgery (perhaps an easy position to take when your nickname is The Body) and some intimate details about her and Seal’s now-extinct love life.

While discussing Klum’s marriage and its dissolution may be off-limits for your New York meet-and-greet, the celebrity’s wacky perspective and funny observations provide ample fodder for discussion.  Consider the following bits of trivia for potential conversation topics:

  • Klum’s good luck charm is a bag full of her baby teeth.
  • In addition to working in high fashion, Klum has also designed a collection for Birkenstock shoes.
  • Heidi Klum is also a Barbie doll, part of Mattel’s Blonde Ambition line.
  • Klum is known as a generous and creative gift-giver.  In 2008, she paid $2,000 for a year’s worth of cupcakes to be delivered to Victoria Beckham.  She spent $5,000 on a pair of earrings for Tyra Banks.
  • Klum had one of her early breakthroughs in television appearing on “Spin City.”  According to Klum, “Michael J. Fox is a great, sexy, funny, short man. I had so much fun on that show.  There was this scene where we were lying in bed together after sex.  But instead of having a cigarette, I start yodeling, because I’m German, see?  He kept making me laugh, we were cracking up.”

Klum’s great humor and warmth lend her a humanity that you don’t often see in celebrities and supermodels.  Her unique approach to life is evident in her entertaining interviews as well as in her small gestures, such as her cheek kisses and “auf wiedersehen” to parting contestants on “Project Runway.”  If you place the winning bid on this auction, you can start practicing your “guten tag!”
