There is a certain romantic appeal about carrying your home around with you, in a recreation vehicle (RV). You have the ability to have all the luxury trappings of home, but you’re mobile, and can therefore explore this magnificent country we live in with minimum bother. Unlike tent camping, RVs withstand the inconvenience of things like weather, or too much “nature.’ In addition, you can meet up with other RVers, whose sense of community is legendary. Of course, for the most part we are talking about modern RVs, but there is a sub-genre of RV owners who’d rather go vintage.
Today’s remarkable listing is for those folks (known as “Airstreamers”) who love the look and feel of a vintage RV, and who can do without some of the more modern amenities. Take a look and admire this 1964 Airstream Globe Trotter:
In my neighborhood, there is an Airstream parked around the corner, and I have peeked inside in awe. The one on offer seems as perfect as the one down the road from me, it’s interior as shiny and clean-looking as the brushed aluminum outside. The seller describes this Airstream (excuse the CAPS, they are the seller’s, not mine):
“THIS 1964 VINTAGE AIRSTREAM GLOBETROTTER TRAILER IS IN GREAT CONDITION, READY TO ROLL FOR YOUR TRAVEL AND CAMPING ADVENTURES.
THE AIRSTREAM HAS BEEN THOUGHTFULLY REJUVENATED WITH NEW COUCH FOAM CUSHIONS, THE SIDE GOUCHO IN FAUX LEATHER COVER AND THE FRONT SOFA/BED IN A BEAUTIFUL TROPICAL DESIGN FABRIC WITH MATCHING WINDOW DRAPERY. THE FLOORING HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH ARMSTRONG CERAMIC TILE PATTERN LINOLEUM TO PRESERVE ITS ORIGINAL LOOK. THE COUNTERS, SINK AND CABINETS ARE ALL ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD SHAPE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME VENEER CHIPPING IN A FEW SPOTS ON THE CLOSET DOORS. DOMETIC REFRIGERATOR RUNS ON BOTH GAS AND ELECTRIC, COOLS AND FREEZES ICE WELL. THE ORIGINAL MAGIC CHEF GAS RANGE HAS FOUR BURNERS AND WORKS WELL. THE ROOFTOP COLEMAN AIR CONDITIONER RUNS ICE COLD. THE GAS HEATER HAS BEEN TESTED RECENTLY AND HEATS WELL. THREE OF THE SIX WINDOWS OPEN PROPERLY BUT THE OTHER THREE WILL NEED NEW WINDOW CRANKS. ALL INTERIOR, EXTERIOR LIGHTS AS WELL AS THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ARE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. THE WATER SYSTEM HAS NOT BEEN USED IN SEVERAL YEARS AND HAS NOT BEEN TESTED RECENTLY.
THE OUTSIDE SHELL IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE NOTWITHSTANDING SEVERAL SMALL, SHALLOW INDENTATIONS ON THE FRONT CORNER AND REAR PANELS AND HAS BEEN HAND-POLISHED TWICE OVER BY THE SELLER LAST MONTH. BOTH WHEELS SPORT ORIGINAL, BABYMOON HUBCAPS, HAVE NEW TIRES INCLUDING THE SPARE AS WELL AS REPACKED BEARINGS AND NEW BRAKES WITH ONLY A FEW HUNDRED MILES OF WEAR. THIS AIRSTREAM GLOBETROTTER ALSO COMES WITH A STABILIZING 2″ BALL AND HITCH AND CLEAR FLORIDA TITLE TO GET YOU READY TO ROLL!!”
Now if you think you can simply up and buy this Airstream and fit in with the community, think again. It turns out there is another essential piece of Americana that needs to come with any Airstream. The Airstream blog explains:
“Along with our car trailers, there are tons of other things that can make your time on the road great. One is a pink flamingo – yes, the fun, eye catching lawn ornament, which since its creation in 1957 has become one of the most ubiquitous yard decorations across America. Pink flamingos have also become an important part of Airstream culture, as many Airstreamers have flamingos that travel the country with them, to be displayed at every stop. It’s a way to call out to other Airstreamers and enhance our community.”
Who are we to argue? Luckily, eBay has plenty of pink flamingos for sale. You can find them by searching here.
Good luck bidding; here’s a little Airstream ditty by country singer Miranda Lambert:
