A 1968 Shelby GT500 called “Eleanor”

On this page we catch up with and diagnose the search trends on eBay from the previous week. We get our information by matching the top 20 items spiking daily in search trends from eBay itself with other topics currently being searched on outside the eBay walls.

Top Search Trends: Week ending Friday January 25, 2013

Continuing a 2013 trend we first observed last week, one of the main car-related search terms was for Shelby.  You might recall that in last week’s post we highlighted a 1965 Shelby Other COBRA CSX.  This week we found two Shelbys our searchers might have wanted to see, both with auctions that had recently ended.

The ended auction is for this 1968 Shelby GT500 Eleanor 410 Keith Craft Big Block, Nitrous System, 4 Speed:

This Shelby made our high-value list (see below), finally selling for $112,000.  According to the listing, the car was modeled after the movie Gone in 60 Seconds.  The car is powerful, producing 665 Horsepower (515 Horsepower plus an additional 150 when using the nitrous system).

On the other side, we found this 1969 Shelby GT500 Auto 428 CJ Competition Red with Black Interior Original Owner:

The reserve was not met on this beauty, an almost-perfect project car.  The seller’s father kept the car in the garage since the mid-‘80s.  The seller explains:

“Again, everything about this car is original including engine, transmission, paint, interior, wheels, smog components, factory A/C, compressor, radiator, glass, etc. The interior is in very good condition. And the exterior is in great shape… Obviously, this vehicle is not currently running, but with some relatively minor work this car could easily be a top-tier original Shelby. This would make a great project car. My dad has no intention of restoring this car, and I am too busy with work and school to get this car up and running.”

Aside from queries related to cars, we had some very mundane and very unusual search terms this week.  Given the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens are headed for the Super Bowl next week, it was no surprise to see searches for jerseys and gear for both teams top our most searched terms.  Interestingly, searches for San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick were top of mind for eBay shoppers, but Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco did not even make the list.  Should we assume this means San Francisco will win?  We have a terrible track record of predicting the outcome of sporting events based on the frequency or infrequency of search terms, so we’ll just keep quiet this time.

The unusual search term was for J Dilla.  Some research revealed this ended auction for DILLA RECORD COLLECTION ~ Jay Dee J Dilla ~ MA DUKES SIGNED CERT Hip Hop Breaks

You can read more about the J Dilla record collection here.  Apparently the interest was so high that there will be more items available in the future, starting February 4.  Feel free to save the seller or store, dillavinylcollection, to stay aware of when the seller lists new items.
