You know, here on eBay stories we try hard to vary the remarkable items we surface on the blog. From A Space Age bike of the future, from the 1960s to George Washington’s handwritten survey notes, we cover it all (although we admit that sometimes remarkable items fall through the cracks). Since we are not eBay Fahion’s Style Stories blog, we don’t always write about fashion trends and inspiration. And since we are not the eBay Motors Blog, we try not to only talk about cars, cars, cars! Well, until this week, it seems. Just a couple of days ago we told you about this amazing 1958 Porsche 356 cabriolet found in a barn. Given that my motors-inspired quota was covered, I figured it was time to move on to something else.
Until I read my email this morning, that is. As you know, I ask readers to point out remarkable finds, items with interesting stories behind them. I follow folks on Twitter who surface cool items, such as @WhatSellsBest, and others. But one intrepid seller, backyardfind, emailed me (here) this, and told me about another car (with the auction still active, a key component of an eBay story) that I just had to write about. Take a look at today’s remarkable find, this 1967 AMC RAMBLER REBEL SST with 24K ORIGINAL MILES:
Impressive, isn’t she? But it is the story behind the car that is quite remarkable. What caught my eye is how the seller describes the car, as having “never been up for sale.” That piqued my curiosity, and I delved further into the listing description to find the story. I didn’t have to look far; here is an edited version:
Has never been for up for sale… literally. The last time it was in a auction being offered was in a Holiday raffle in late 1966…
Up for sale for the very first time – a rare chance to own a Survivor at No ReserveThis is a fully original – well documented – unrestored & all number matching 1967 AMC Rebel SST 290 V8 Hardtop Coupe. Only has 24,590 actual miles since new & is proven to be the true total mileage the car has traveled. The service records, condition & certified inspector has the mileage to be true. Documentation documenting the mileage since1971. One older lady owner since she won it new till her passing in Jan. 2013. Only been driven by two people it’s entire life, the owner & her husband, Pierce Long.
Documented with factory manuals / warranty book – Service records & California emission certificates since 1971 – Original keys
Original Newspapers Articles covering the raffle & photos of the Rebel being delivered to her home where it has been stored at until Feb. 2013
Imagine a car from 1967 in such great condition, and with such low, original miles. And since the owner won it in a raffle, it has technically never been sold. Here is a video that gives more details:
Seems Mrs. Ora Marie Long was a fortunate and long-lived individual. We wish the bidders luck on winning this stunning and well-preserved piece of history.
Remember, just because you write me (my email is here), doesn’t mean your item will be featured. But if the story is as good as this one, it’s more than likely we’ll have to share it.
